Hello There Reader
Gum disease can creep up on you and has been known to be called the Silent Killer. And with good reason. You don't always know what's going on till you have a disaster.
Like I did. When an abscess broke out over one of my top teeth. However, at the time, I believe my issue escalated due to stress in my life.
However, it's not entirely your fault that you're dealing with dental issues. A lot of it has to do with massive changes in our bodies' microbial makeup—changes that have really sped up over the last 50 years. But the roots of the problem actually go way back—thousands of years, in fact.
Thanks to collaborations between anthropologists and microbiologists, we now know that things started to shift when humans began farming, especially growing grains like wheat, barley, millet, and maize. In every region where people started eating these grains—wheat and barley in the Middle East, millet in sub-Saharan Africa, and maize in Central America—dental problems exploded. We're talking about tooth decay, gum disease, abscesses, and even tooth loss, affecting up to nearly half of all recovered teeth from those times.
And unfortunately, that trend hasn’t stopped. Today, 60–90% of school kids have cavities, 1 in 5 adults has gum disease, and almost every adult shows some signs of tooth decay. It's a long-running issue—and one that’s still evolving.
As dire as this sounds, there are still safe holistic methods that can help you to stay on top of tooth and gum decay.
Below are my suggestions:
Hydro floss oral Irrigator
1. Hydro Floss Oral Irrigator- This is a must! Especially if you are having some of the problems I was experiencing. The only way to safely and effectively clean out pus or stuck food is to irrigate your gums. I irrigate twice a day and fill 2 containers of water each time. This may shrink your gum pockets but I would still recommend visiting a dentist so they can keep you appraised of your gum pocket depths.
2. Colloidal Silver - A natural antibiotic that is safe, non-toxic and without side effects. If you are experiencing bleeding gums, pouring in about an ounce of the silver into your irrigator. Your gums will quit bleeding almost immediately.
3. Oil Pulling- If you want to rejuvenate your teeth and stop sensitivity, try oil pulling for a few weeks. Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that has proved beneficial. There is a small amount of work involved, but the benefits definitely pay off. Oil pulling is traditionally done with sesame oil, though you can also use other organic, cold-pressed oils like coconut or sunflower. I chose coconut oil because for years, I’ve also been using it on my face as a moisturizer and have had great results.
Since doing this process, my teeth are whiter, stronger and less sensitive to cold drinks or hard and chewy food. Furthermore, it’s best to use this technique first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach.
Suggested Use: Scoop about 1 tablespoon coconut oil or oil of your choice and pop into your mouth.Chew and hold oil in your mouth till melted (30 seconds). Swish for 5-20 minutes, pulling the oil back and forth and sideways through all teeth. It’s a great way to give your facial muscles a workout too. You’ll be loosening bacteria and hidden food particles even as you move the oil about gently. As with mouthwash, you do not want to swallow it. Spit oil out (into trash, oil could clog pipes) when finished. Finally, rinse your mouth out with good water.
4. Green Smoothies -I know a lot of people struggle with getting enough greens in their diet, but if you can incorporate a green smoothie into your morning routine, your mouth and body will love you for it. Since sugar is your culprit- less fruit for a few months may help curb those hungry bacteria in your mouth.
Apple and Cucumber Detox Smoothie
Green smoothie
1 apple, cut up coarsely
1/2 of an avocado
1/2 cucumber, cut up coarsely
tsp. honey
Handful of greens of your choice
A cup of water or more, sometimes I add coconut or almond milk
5. Supplements - And speaking of detox, you might consider a parasite cleanse for a few weeks. I recommend Doctor Morse's Parasite General. Bacteria bugs love to hide in our gum tissues and this formula may shake them out.
Or mix a minimum teaspoon of Ascorbate C Powderin hot water every day. Drink first thing in the morning. Steeping rose hips tea is also a great source of Vitamin C. Vitamin C tightens your gum tissues almost immediately.
CoQ10 is another excellent supplement that improves your immune response in gum tissues and may reverse the diseased gum conditions as well as strengthen your heart.
However, the best vitamin for teeth, gum and overall health for your body is Vitamin K2.
There are plenty of other supplements I could recommend, but this is a great starting point to begin thinking about your journey to dental wellness.
6. Affirmations- Your emotions can play a huge part in your healing process and this book, “You Can Heal Your Life” written by the late Louise Hay offers lots of useful information and affirmations to keep your emotions in check. This stuff really works! You need to be and stay in the right mind set. Especially these days!
7. And last but not least, If you want to learn how to be more self-sufficient in your oral hygiene care, please visit Alternatives to Dentists. Herbalist, Doug Simons shares his life long wisdom of using plants to heal our gums. I've learned how to take care of abscesses if they rear their ugly head by using parts of a cactus. :) -----------------------------------------------------------
